The challenge
Pacmed Critical is a real-time risk prediction system used in hospitals. It:
- Estimates the probability of readmission or death at any given time.
- Tracks how a patient’s risk evolves during hospitalization.
- Supports clinicians in determining the safest discharge moment.
Initially built by an external agency, Pacmed Critical was in active use across multiple hospitals. While functional, the product faced challenges in scalability, usability, design consistency, and extensibility, especially as Pacmed aimed to expand into a broader product ecosystem.
Value created
Brought professional ways of working grounded in years of design experience.
Redesigned the core product to improve usability, consistency, and trust in critical-care workflows.
Introduced scalable design patterns that enable Pacmed to extend beyond Critical into new products without reinventing the foundation.
Shifted the product from a one-off, agency-built interface into a coherent, flexible design system aligned with Pacmed’s long-term product vision.
Reduced reliance on external vendors by enabling Pacmed’s internal teams to own and evolve the product design.

The BASICS
The project had started a week before I joined. Immersing myself in Ellen Lupton's 'Design is Storytelling,' I adopted its narrative arc as our project framework. From stakeholder sessions to final outcomes, it shaped our cohesive approach.

Context workshops
In our workshop preparation, we've embraced the story arc method as a foundational approach. Alongside providing fundamental explanations, we've honed in on the specific needs of our end users. Utilizing Mirrors sticky notes, we've organized content into vertical blocks on the website pages we're creating. After completing six workshops, we've gained valuable insights into the content required for the website. Now, I'm applying my expertise to refine and tailor the pages accordingly.
